The Threads of my Life: To Be Continued.........

This hand-sewn fabric banner tells a story of my life. These four versions represent me as I have been and will be in the tapestry of my life. Even as a young woman, I knew I had purpose as I became a strong feminist, inspired by my grandmothers and the other women I grew up around. My personality is and has always been big and colorful. I am outspoken and not shy about expressing my self, values, and personal truths. This is the largest version of me but not the only one. The times when I am small, I learn from and listen to the world around me. My grandmothers honed my listening, vocal and artistic inclinations, and crafts and people skills. I was very knowing and strong as a young person, always curious, stepping back to see the experiences of others. I was captivated by the ways people made their mark on the world, especially those who lived differently from me. So, I naturally engaged with the many diverse communities around me, very aware of my own white privilege. I was welcome with open arms, and this brought richness to my own life. I have had the opportunity to get a self-funded education, be an international flight attendant, and be the first art therapist to work in the San Francisco County jails. I have seen beautiful parts of history and the world, but I have also seen the tragedies of mental health, the aftermath of war and the struggles brought on by discrimination. I have used my knowledge and creativity to balance my own life while finding purpose in my ability to help others. I continue to participate in my community, which allows me to knit my future self—acknowledging the paths I have tread and the threads I have sewn. I continue to grow, discover and maintain my strong voice.
