That One Cord I Can't Let Go

This installation is called “That One Cord I Can’t Let Go.” I use umbilical cord as a symbol for certain connections in our lives relationships that really care for us and keep us safe, but also quietly keep us dependent. A lot of the time it’s not that we can’t let go; it’s that we don’t really want to cut that last thread, because there’s comfort, history, and guilt all mixed together. And I call this feeling ‘delayed cutting’ In the piece, some parts feel soft and protected, and others feel more hardened and almost empty, and for me they’re like different stages of one relationship slowly loosening over time. I’m trying to make that tender, sticky space between being held and held back visible.
