Palm Flings
From the balcony of a Palm Springs motel, I watched as the wind died, and the sun slowly set behind the mountains. Not so long ago, the pool was a lively oasis, full of guests seeking relief from the heat. Now it was calm with a chill in the air. The tall trees painted a shadow into the water, while a half-inflated flamingo rested its head in the corner, away from all the other pool floats. At the time, I couldn't help but identify with that inanimate flamingo.
