Hello, I'm Michael Salemi.
Artist's Statement: My work uses highly textured layers of color and images to create paintings that challenge the distinctions between artistic categories: collage vs. painting; abstract vs. surreal; digital vs. analog; and frame vs. picture. I strive to create images that resonate cross-culturally by employing symbolism and imagery from both contemporary and ancient sources. I create these complex textures by digitally combining abstract photography, stylus brushwork, and scans of my 2D and 3D portfolios. Once saved in a digital library, I can combine elements to create a shifting palette of moods and visual aesthetics. The adaptability of digital media allows me to avoid treating any single image as too precious. Instead, each successful piece becomes a milestone rather than a final product, fostering ongoing exploration and reinvention. Bio: Michael completed his undergraduate degree in Sculpture from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, with a concentration in cast metal. He worked as an independent artist for 15 years. One job for a Stanford professor led to a long career in sleep medicine, working in health-tech startups, earning a medical device patent, and co-founding a successful chain of sleep disorders labs. For the last 10 years of his business career, Michael worked in the nonprofit sector. In 2024, he returned to his original passion: creating fine art.
