What the Ground Remembers

Walking through a winter park in Washington, D.C., I stopped at a shallow puddle resting on the worn stones of the path. In its still surface, a reflection appeared—a bare, skeletal tree stretching upward, etched against the cold sky. The contrast between the rigid geometry of the stones and the organic, intricate silhouette of the tree creates a striking balance of manmade structure and nature's design. The scene felt like a quiet reminder: though the park was cleared and reshaped for human order, the ground has not forgotten its original state of trees, grass and roots in nature. The puddle became a portal, merging past and present, reminding me that nature persists in unexpected ways.
