Saint Cecilia

The inspiration for this mixed media collage and clay artwork is the story of Saint Cecilia. Saint Cecilia is celebrated as the patron saint of musicians. According to legend, although Cecilia took a vow of chastity, her parents insisted she marry. During the ceremony, she stood aside and sang in her heart to our Lord while the musicians played. The legend states that Cecilia told her new husband, Valerian, about her vow of chastity and that there was an angel of the Lord protecting her who would punish him if he violated her. When her husband wanted to see the angel, Cecilia told him he must be baptized by the Pope first. He was baptized and was able to see the angel. In this piece, Saint Cecilia is surrounded by angels and has a musical halo. The two human heart icons at Saint Cecilia’s sides represent the music to our Lord in her heart. And the wedding rings and floral heart represent her marriage. I created the Saint Cecilia image with text-to-image AI, printed then transferred the image to polymer clay. After baking, the clay was hand painted for enhancement. The wood art board was painted then finished in collage decoupage. Piece is sealed with polyurethane. Comes ready to hang with picture wire and hardware fastened to back.
