The Nearing is part of an ongoing series exploring the passage of time. As I move through my eighth decade of life, thoughts of the inevitable often weave their way into my work. This piece draws inspiration from Medieval art, with its symbolic use of the hourglass and the skull, yet I’ve introduced a surrealist touch through the floating clocks that drift across the sky. The central female figure stands in a Renaissance-inspired setting, holding an hourglass that signifies time slipping away—the nearing of life’s end. In the corner, a skull inscribed with memento mori serves as a reminder not only of mortality, but of the importance of living fully.Hidden throughout the work are small messages and quotations, inviting viewers to look closely and discover their own interpretations. Ultimately, The Nearing reflects both a meditation on death and a celebration of life’s fleeting beauty.
