Part of an ongoing series responding to our political landscape, this piece reimagines the Statue of Liberty in the spirit of the Renaissance masters—grief-stricken rather than serene, tears rolling down her face. She holds her torch as always; in her other hand, the Constitution burns, flames spreading behind her as the New York City skyline dissolves into fragments of newsprint and script. Her crown, representing the seven continents, rests before a flag flown backward. The world is upside down. At her center, an anatomical heart lies split cleanly in two. This is what heartbreak looks like when it belongs to a whole country at once. And beneath it all, in the type we've read a thousand times: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to be free." The words haven't changed. Everything around them has.
