It always begins by flipping through a vintage magazine, not reading or intently searching, but broadly scanning for resonant images. Eventually there is a spark, a psychological association, a knowing that two or more images are connected often without a conscious understanding of how or why. I then cut the images meticulously from their former context, and begin to play with them and to puzzle them together in different configurations until a story emerges out from the deep psyche and ultimately into the subconscious and conscious minds. Once the visual portion of the story feels complete, I employ a sort of bibliomancy by waiting for the right text to 'call' to me and to draw me towards the precise passage which serves to render the work and its poly-entendric poetic, punny, or paradoxical message complete. Texts most often call from an autobiographical work such as Carl Jung's "Memories, Dreams, Reflections", "The Life of St. Teresa of Avila" or "The Philosophy of Andy Warhol.”
