Nanaji's Garden
This piece is a celebration of my maternal grandfather’s love for growing plants. In my native language, Hindi-Urdu, "Nana" means maternal grandfather and "ji" is a suffix used to convey respect. I grew up observing Nanaji devote endless hours caring for his plants -- pruning branches, tending to the soil, watering... He nurtured a special bond with every plant, tuning in to each one's needs. When the plants bore fruit, he happily gave away the harvest to friends and family. In this abstract painting, I depict the mysterious language understood between my grandfather and the fauna, the abundance of fruit-like forms slowly developing, and the light that beckons seedlings to push up through the dark soil.
