Situational...Awareness

Diptych paintings reflecting the situational awareness we are encouraged to possess to safely navigate urban settings. These safety measures, while necessary, bring discomfort at times when I am just trying to enjoy myself. In these images I wanted to represent the serene feelings I have while going a for quick, sunset drive or a simple walk through a park, listening to music. However, in each image I am doing what is advised to keep my awareness for lurking dangers: holding a set of keys to use as a weapon; taking one earbud out so as to hear an unwelcomed advance of danger. Despite the sereneness in the background the viewer is faced with these tactics and a figure that represents a crime scene chalk outline, suggesting that the worst has occurred. Suddenly the sereneness now represents a different realm.
