Still Water — Michael Hurd Original Oil Painting on Canvas | Signed | Professionally Appraised at $8,765 Still Water is a beautiful original landscape painting by American artist Michael Hurd (1946–2026), a member of one of America's most celebrated artistic families. With a remarkable sensitivity to light, atmosphere, and the natural landscape, Hurd captures a quiet moment along a gently flowing creek east of Las Vegas, Nevada. Softly rendered trees rise above rocky banks, while the water winds through the landscape, reflecting the pale blue sky and surrounding greenery. The composition balances movement and stillness. Delicate highlights dance across the flowing water, while the muted earth tones, subtle greens, and atmospheric blues create a peaceful, contemplative setting. Hurd's expressive brushwork gives the scene an inviting sense of place, allowing the viewer to experience the tranquility of the landscape. An Extraordinary Artistic Legacy Michael Hurd was the son of renowned American artists Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth Hurd, the grandson of legendary illustrator N.C. Wyeth, and the nephew of celebrated painter Andrew Wyeth. Raised on the family's historic Sentinel Ranch in New Mexico, Hurd grew up surrounded by art and the landscapes that inspired generations of his family. After attending Stanford University and pursuing a business career, he returned to New Mexico and began studying painting under the guidance of his mother. Although deeply influenced by his family's artistic heritage, Hurd developed a distinctive style characterized by atmospheric landscapes, sensitive color relationships, and a strong connection to the natural world. In recognition of his artistic accomplishments and contributions to preserving his family's legacy, Hurd received the 2016 New Mexico Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts. His work continues the tradition of American representational painting while maintaining an individual artistic voice. Provenance & History According to the accompanying professional appraisal, Still Water was formerly held in a family museum collection and was acquired from The Circle Gallery in Old Town San Diego in December 1984.
