The Eagle Has Landed
The Great Migration of settlers across North America, driven by the belief in Manifest Destiny, brought profound disruption to Native American lives, cultures, and lands. In this narrative, the eagle—long a sacred symbol of vision, strength, and spiritual connection in Native traditions—is reinterpreted as a metaphor for the white man and his concept of freedom. To settlers, the eagle symbolized boundless opportunity and the divine right to expand westward. But to Native peoples, this same bird, now altered in meaning, came to represent the encroaching force that stole their freedom, shattered their sovereignty, and redefined the land under foreign ideals. Thus, the eagle becomes a dual symbol—of liberation for some, and of loss for others.
