The Stairway where My Brother Fractured a Finger, Kyiv
I was at a friend’s place — perhaps for the first time — looking out the window. Suddenly something pierced me, seized me… I recognized that courtyard. It was the courtyard from my dreams (in those dreams it is always either inside a wardrobe or hidden in the middle of a cupboard). I turned around. In reality, I had been brought to this house. It was not my world — it was not a world at all. A little later, when I stepped outside, I felt something similar again. A moment of paralysis… and I understood everything. It was the sensation of a person being watched. And it was impossible to grasp — who was watching, or from where… I almost forgot: while working on the painting, I accidentally learned that it was on this very staircase that my older brother had once broken his finger.
