SOLD Heavy Lies the Crown

The initial source of inspiration for this piece comes came from the ad campaign for Virginia Slims, “You’ve Come A Long Way Baby”. My Mom used to smoke this brand. The cigarettes themselves are longer and narrower than average cigarettes, reflected by the name “Slims.” This adoption of the word “slim” sometimes even “superslim,” is a clear reference to a woman’s figure; insinuating that if you smoke them you might become slim. Another thing that inspired this piece was Ali Wong. She had a bit in her comedy special, “Do you know how successful I would be if I had a wife?”. I laughed. Then It got me thinking of all of the expectations we put on women starting from a young age all the way to through to marriage and motherhood and grandmotherhood. We call little girls a princess and promise one day meet their Prince Charming and become queen but heavy lies the crown. It’s a house of cards and everything that goes around comes around. Daughters, Moms, and all women - We need to do better. I need to do better.
