Baker's Dozen
Baker’s Dozen was conceived for the exhibition Chef’s Kiss. When my husband jokingly suggested I paint a baker’s dozen, the idea immediately transformed into a meditation on excess as grace. A pile of donuts becomes an altar while a single extra donut hovers above, held aloft by disembodied hands and framed like a blessing. In this suspended moment, indulgence turns sacred: the unexpected thirteenth donut is no longer surplus, but gift. Part of my Domestic Surrealism series, the painting elevates a familiar comfort food into a quiet ritual. Rendered in oil with deliberate glazing—playing with the literal and symbolic sheen of frosted donuts—the work blends humor, desire, and reverence. And yes—you know you will start counting the donuts and do not be surprised if the count never quite settles.
