LOST

“Lost” is part of a series titled, “Messages”. The photographs are political / social statements of graffiti from around the world cropped to give an emphasis on the perceived message or a message I would like the viewer to imagine. The walls and surfaces around the world are a living ongoing canvas for art and graffiti. There are many souls infused on these surfaces. Time has become the main artist. I have captured, cropped and edited the graffiti (Messages) photographs from my travels to continue transforming how one may read the messages coming from these images. Some are political, some are purely open for interpretation, and then some are like DADA experiments to me. In all of my interpretations I am playing with proportion and harmony as I see it with geometry, color and texture. When I took and edited this photograph, I didn't realize the significance of the image of the woman in the top left corner, which appeared to resemble a "lost poster" for finding a loved one. The numbers "111," which hold spiritual significance for many, further intrigued me. Upon researching, I discovered that the tiles depicted a tribute to Luísa Cortesão, who passed away in 2016. Luísa became involved in street art through Lata 65, a project that teaches spray and stencil techniques to older individuals. In 2012, she enrolled in a workshop run by Lara Seixo Rodrigues, where she learned to create art on walls using paint cans. It was during this time that Luísa cut the silhouette of a witch with a spray can, a design that would ultimately become the emblem of Lata 65. Luísa was also a photographer and later a graffiti artist, making her one of my favorites. The numbers "111" took on even greater meaning with this context.
