Hello, I'm Kyra Teis.

I come to fine art from a long career in children’s book illustration, with many traditionally-published books to my name. Illustration has been valuable training for the technical aspects of digital art-making, as well as for developing an intuitive sense of mood and message. My art always begins with hand-painted paper. I scan fragments into Photoshop and construct digital collages that are then realized as giclée prints. These can be sold as is, or I can hand-apply surface interest in a number of ways. Working this way helps me blend the analog materials of my heart with the digital language native to my generation. This hybrid method allows me maximum flexibility in both expression and delivery of custom art. Visual inspiration comes from my interest in textile arts and Japanese kimono motifs. I am fascinated by Japanese design that often combines both organic and geometric elements. Many of my abstract paintings float sharp forms or patterns on top of natural, soft-edged backgrounds. I enjoy highlighting harmonies between shapes and colors, and encouraging the viewer’s eye to follow lines and relationships within a piece. See my website for children's books, illustrations, and a video about how I make my art: www.kyrateis.com.
